Now, our farmers are developing pilot Abaca plantations of 50-60 hectares per location in several places, such as: Saketi, Banten; Malang, East Java; Ambon, Maluku. This plantation will be harvested within the next 1 to 1.5 years. And Abaka plantations will be expanded due to the large market demand from within and outside the country. Abaca fiber has high strength and is used in the paper industry for making mimeograph, mats, woven fabrics, tea bags, filter paper and banknotes. It is also used to make handicraft such as carpets, furniture, clothing, and bags. Abaca fiber is used in fishing nets, hawsers, and shipping lines/ropes due to beneficial properties such as flexibility, durability, and saltwater resistance. It is classified as a hard fiber along with sisal, coir, and hennequin. In addition, abaca fiber is used in gifts, toys, and housewares. Furthermore, it is used as an alternative to glass fiber reinforced plastics components. It is also called biodegradable and sustainable fiber.
