Sena Mills entered the Sri Lankan edible oil industry in the late 1960's as coconut oil mill under the leadership of Mr. Baduge Karunasena. The company achieved a steady growth over the decades from the point of inception. By the 1980's Sena Mills was one of the largest coconut oil mills operating in the country and became a reputed producer and exporter of coconut oil and related products. The company reached a key milestone in 1999 with the establishment of Sena Mills Refineries (Pvt) Ltd, under the new leadership of Mr. Thishan Karunasena. Sena Mills Refineries (Pvt) Ltd is the first continuous edible oil refinery established in Sri Lanka. Starting with the refining of coconut oil, the company gradually expanded to conduct processes such as refining, fractionation, esterification and inter-esterification of palm oil and manufacturing of oil and fat-based constituents of bakery products and soap blends, focusing mainly on wholesale operations. Concurrently the company commenced the export of edible oils, fats and related products, capturing new international export markets over time.
