Food Color - Ponceau 4R E-124

Ponceau 4R, also known as E‑124, is a synthetic strawberry‑red food colour with CI 16255 and CAS 2611-82-7. Aryan Dyes & Pigments lists this dye as part of its portfolio in Surat, Gujarat, India, and markets it for use across a broad spectrum of processed foods. The colour complies with the international food‑additive code E‑124, which permits its use in beverages, confectionery and bakery products. It is water‑soluble, allowing easy dispersion in liquid formulations.

Typical commercial grades of Ponceau 4R achieve a purity of at least 94 % as verified by HPLC, a level commonly required by food regulators. The dye’s solubility is about 10 g per 100 mL of water at 25 °C, facilitating incorporation into both hot and cold processing streams. It is generally supplied in 25 kg food‑grade drums, sealed to protect against moisture, and stored in a cool, dry environment to preserve colour stability.

Producers of soft drinks, alcoholic beverages, preserved fruits, confectionery, bakery items and dairy fats often add Ponceau 4R to obtain a vivid red appearance. Pharmaceutical formulations and flavored powders also make use of this colour.
